Smith a graduate of Wake Forest College (Class of 1882) and member of the Euzelian Literary Society and was a merchant in Timmonsville, South Carolina. He later served as Lt. Governor, and President of the Baptist State Convention of South Carolina and Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention.
